About Us
Bringalbit is a grazing property one-hour from Melbourne by car or by train. The land was first settled in 1858 and the present homestead begun in 1870 as a shearing shed. It was converted into at a large house in 1895 and is built of stone quarried from the property. The golden coloured stone has also been used to build a spillway at the northern end of a large ornamental lake, which is next to the homestead. The lake was made in the 1890’s and has a small island. It is covered with waterlilies and a flock of 20 domestic ducks. Many native Australian ducks, moorhens, herons, grebes and cranes make it their home too.

Homestead Accommodation We have four bedrooms in the homestead available for guests. The furnishings are all of the 1890 period to match the style of the place and the rooms are spacious. There is a large guest sitting room with a piano, organ, television and log fire. The dining room has a log fire and a table which seats 14 people. We serve dinner by candle and firelight, and can provide delicious country gourmet meals for our visitors. Around the homestead is a 4 ha (10 acre) park and garden. There are lovely walks around the park or you can wander further into the undulating farmland among the granite boulders, taking in the wonderful views. As well as the ducks on the lake, we have a flock of 150 guinea fowl that roam around eating grasshoppers and other insects. We keep peacocks for decoration and chickens for eating and fresh eggs. We grow many of our own vegetables and have planted an olive grove to make our own olive oil in the future. There is a small flock of pet sheep that are tame and hand-fed, and two Scottish Highland Cattle bullocks which are also for hand feeding. The rest of the farm has Angus cattle on it.

Separate Cottage We recently totally renovated a 3-bedroom, 3-bathroom house, which was built in 1960. It is in a private situation with lovely views across the landscape. It has a fully equipped kitchen, is decorated in a modern country style look. In our visitors book, people mostly comment about the space (there are no other houses or lights at night to be seen), the sense of history in the old buildings, the huge old trees, the lovely gardens, the animals and birds and the food we cook.
